VCU BASEBALL RECRUITING CLASS RANKED TOPS IN THE CAA
RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University baseball program was recognized as having one of the top recruiting classes in the nation this week after Collegiate Baseball released its 2009 NCAA Division I recruiting class rankings.
VCU has the highest-ranked class in the Colonial Athletic Association, while Georgia State was the only other conference school to make the list.
“As a group, it’s one of the best we’ve had in a while,” VCU head coach Paul Keyes said of the entire 2010 recruiting class. “The coaching staff did a great job of identifying our needs and attracting some of the best players, not only on the state level, but also the national stage. All of these young men are not just great athletes, but great individuals that we will look to build our program around for years to come.”
In all, the Black & Gold will welcome eight newcomers for the 2010 campaign, highlighted by All-American outfielder John Lenherr (Overland Park, K.S./Johnson County Community College) and local right-handed pitcher Blake Hauser (Midlothian, Va./Manchester), who was selected in the 25th round by Cleveland in last June’s Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
Also joining the Rams are junior college standouts Greg Fujii (San Jose, Calif./San Jose City College), Derrick Raybon (Cayce, S.C./USC Sumter) and Garrett Alexander (Louisburg College), as well as freshmen Kyle Haynes (Stafford, Va./Mountain View), Nike Kime (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) and Ryan Farrar (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee).
VCU had the second-highest recruiting class in the state behind 2009 College World Series participant University of Virginia. Annual instate opponents VMI and Liberty were also recognized for their recruiting efforts.
